A History of Palermo Football Club: 125 Years of Rosanero Passion (1900–2025)
The history of Palermo Football Club is a story rich in tradition, passion, and connection with the city. The glorious Rosanero team was founded in 1900, at a time when Palermo had a vibrant English community, essential for spreading football among the city’s sports enthusiasts.
At the beginning of the 20th century, when English ships docked at Palermo’s port, impromptu matches between sailors and local citizens were frequent. These sporting encounters helped strengthen interest in football and laid the foundations for the creation of the team.
Among the most important figures of that era was Sir Thomas Lipton, a well-known tea merchant in the Mediterranean and worldwide. Surprised to find an already organized football team in Palermo, Lipton promoted the creation of the famous Lipton Cup, one of the first international football tournaments, in which Palermo played a leading role.
In 2025, the club and its supporters celebrate a historic milestone: 125 years since the founding of Palermo Football Club. This anniversary is a testament to the club’s long sporting tradition and the unwavering love of its fans.
Currently, Palermo plays in Serie B, but the dream of Rosanero supporters remains to celebrate this important anniversary with a promotion to Serie A, bringing the team back to the top level of Italian football.
