Mafia: a Walking Tour to Understand Its Origins and Those Who Fought It
“Unhappy is the land that still needs heroes” – Bertolt Brecht
Our guided walking tour through the historic center of Palermo offers a unique opportunity to understand the political, social, and economic context in which the Sicilian Mafia was born and developed. It also lets you discover the history of the anti-mafia movement through the symbolic figures of the two prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
The first thing we will visit is the No Mafia Memorial. This is a powerful place of memory and civic reflection. Our antimafia tour continues through the streets of Palermo’s historic center. In some areas the city’s history is deeply intertwined with organized crime and the resistance of the State and civil society.

At the Church of San Domenico, the Pantheon of Palermo’s illustrious citizens, we will pay tribute to the tomb of Giovanni Falcone. We will then moves to the historic Kalsa district, the birthplace of both magistrates. We will stop at the Casa di Paolo. The former birthplace of the prosecutor Borsellino is now a community center supporting children and young people of the neighborhood. It was founded by Paolo Borsellino’s brother in 2015.
The itinerary also addresses the urban wounds of the Kalsa district: from the bombings of World War II to post-war real estate speculation, often linked to mafia interests. The tour concludes at the remains of Giovanni Falcone’s childhood home, today a symbol of redemption and a starting point for the urban renewal and cultural rebirth of Palermo’s historic center.
